Medical Simulation for Exploration-Class Spaceflight Missions

International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare 2018.

Development of simulation programs for studying and training the management of medical emergencies in extreme environments will be presented. Lab and field-based approaches will be discussed. An engineering approach to the development of a spaceflight medical simulator will be presented as an example, along with a formal needs analysis for simulating medical emergencies in extreme environments. Adaptation of existing training solutions for extreme environments will also be discussed. Learning Objectives: - Outline the advantages and disadvantages to conducting medical simulations in remote and extreme environments - Describe an engineering approach to developing simulation capabilities for medical care in novel environments - Conduct a formal needs analysis to inform a novel medical simulation program
